cool artist... sofia arnold

i've been gazing adoringly at this print called "the salt sirens" by sofia arnold, available at the shiny squirrel.

isn't it fantastic?

cool artist... rebecca schoenecker

good morning friends!! i hope you're in the mood for some killer art today, because i am, and that's what i'm going to show you! starting with these beauties by rebecca schoenecker. they are done in gouache, ink, and pencil on paper, and she also has some great embroidered pieces on her website.

i found rebecca's work through a link on lisa solomon's blog, and if you are not familiar with lisa's work, you really should be. it is incredible.

both rebecca and lisa are in a show called "
devotion to thread" in milkwaukee, wisconsin at woodland pattern, from may 17- june 13, and if you are in the area, you best be gettin' your booty over to see that show. i bet it's amazing!

ps: it's curated by faythe levine, the one woman wonder who created the documentary "handmade nation," who will be at ICE on june 7th here in atlanta, and who will be screening her film! can't wait....

cool blog... motywacja

i love this image. the lines are beautiful, and it reminds me of birds. does it remind you of birds, too?

i saw this on a new-to-me blog this morning called motywacja. i wish i could read it; it's in polish, which is entirely foreign to me, but i enjoyed looking through the images. i've gathered that it's the blog of artist edyta ubych, but that's about it!

do any of you speak polish? please?

photos from the weekend

on saturday i had the most lovely time at the kirkwood spring fling! it was a gorgeous day, the people wandering through the festival were wonderful, and it's always so affirming to see people's facial expressions while they're looking at my work-- that's something i really miss in selling work online.

this was my booth-- doesn't it look cute??
and we lucked out by being placed next to the Dulce Vegan girls! I had the most delicious chocolate chip banana bread...... lucky for me they will be at ICE, too! (June 7th.... put it on the calendar...)

and this is ryan and i, being goofy as always.....

daily painting delay

due to a pesky internet connection this afternoon, the posting of my daily painting is going to be delayed until later on today.

in the meantime, did you listen to marisa's podcast? it is AWESOME. you should go listen to it right now. really.
hope you're all having a fantastic friday!!

cartolina cards

i have to admit something. i don't think i've ever bought a card in my whole life. now before you start thinking i'm some kind of scrooge that doesn't like to send people well-wishes and birthday wishes and the like, let me explain.

i've made cards for every occasion since i was a little kid-- birthdays, christmas, you name it.

(ok, i lied... i just remembered i bought 2 of these cards to give to ryan on 2 separate occasions. but that's because they're so freakin' hilarious that i couldn't pass them up.)

anyway, if i were to buy some cards, these cards by cartolina would be a top pick. i love them. i think the vibrant colors and lush patterns are just killer.

don't you like them? now i wish i was going to the stationary show this weekend to check out all the paper goods. (cartolina will be there! booth #1663)
but then i'd probably end up buying a whole stack of cards to bring home and i'd be one big fat liar.

so i guess it's good i'm not going. but i still wish i were. sigh.

japan and its cuteness

good lord, these matchbook covers from japan are the CUTEST things i've ever seen.
i have a feeling that if i ever went to japan i probably wouldn't ever want to come back. if it is full of adorable stuff like this, i could stay there forever and not even miss the good ol' us of a. seriously.

and this is a package for biscuits. biscuits! since when did biscuits become so arty? i love it!!

carolanna parlato

something about these paintings by carolanna parlato is really speaking to me this morning. they are so bold and vibrant, and i love the clean lines achieved with acrylic paint. they feel very graphic and painterly at the same time.

carolanna shows her paintings at oht gallery in boston. she also has a lovely website full of her paintings.

daily painting #1

today marks the day that i begin something i've wanted to do for a long time and have been procrastinating: DAILY PAINTINGS.

since i work small most of the time anyway, this is going to fit in nicely with what is comfortable to me, but also hopefully stretch me in some directions that are new and challenging.

and the fun part for you: they will all be for sale!! and since they will mostly be on the small side, they will be affordable! which means you can own an original piece of art and you won't empty your wallet doing it.

sound good? ok. good.

so, i will be posting the paintings (i think sometimes they will be drawings, too...) here on the blog, along with my other normal posts, and i will also post them on my website.

please do let me know what you think. and if you see a piece you can't live without, snap it up!!

the painting above: "abundant thoughts", 8x8", $85.00

{buy original here}

cool artist... alona harpaz

these are paintings i would love to see in person.
alona harpaz has a solo show right now at nicole klagsbrun gallery in new york from may 9- june 7, 2008. if you are in the new york area, first of all you are lucky, and second of all, go see this show!!! i would if i could.

concert posters by jason munn

i'll never say no to a really creative concert poster. i've written about them before, and i'm going to write about them again, because i think it's one of the loveliest ways to make art in the world of creativity. because of the huge number of bands and concerts, the posters are ever-changing and ever in demand and are, in my mind, the perfect place to be a ultra creative and imaginative.

these posters by jason munn totally fit the bill. i love them. LOVE. and i am so so jealous of all the bands he's created posters for! wilco, death cab for cutie, and the decemberists? it's like he's living my dream life.

jason 's studio in oakland, ca is called the small stakes, and he has a killer portfolio.
he also recently designed some t-shirts for patagonia (they have some really great shirts designed by independent artists!) that you can see right here.

make sure to stop by jason's website, because there are many, many more posters to see.

{creative history} wladyslaw hasior

i know, i know. who the heck is that? you're asking yourself.

several years ago while traveling around europe with a friend, we found ourselves in a little town in poland called zakopane, very close to the slovakian border. this was truly one of the most wonderful places i have ever been. it was a polish ski town of sorts, with a ski resort at the top of a mountain at the top of which was the obrder between poland and slovakia.

but i digress. one of the most interesting parts about visiting zakopane was our trip to the wladyslaw hasior gallery. hasior (1928-1999) was a polish painter, sculptor, stage designer, and poet. he had one heck of a personality, and reactions to his work were often extreme-- ranging from hatred to admiration. his works were indeed strange, sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes funny, and there was this bizarre, ethereal music running throughout the gallery the whole time we were there that made the whole experience more complete. the gallery was born in 1985, by hasior himself. it is in a building that was built in 1935, in the zakopane style which is so prominent in the region.

he used all kinds of materials in his work, from mannequins to forks to scraps of metal. useless objects were transformed into strange pieces of art that were intricately tied to hasior's reality of living through the war (wwII) and being accused of patronizing the communists.

this is what is said about his work in the exhibition catalog in his gallery in zakopane:

"wladyslaw hasior's works are universal. they are very Polish, too. while they are connected with the Podhale region, its culture, beliefs, history and nature, and are concerned with the basics of work, the rhythm of life, and with regional tradition and modernity, they also convey a more general message. this message is not just something extra, appearing alongside local values. all hasior's work incorporates some universal qualities." (quoted from here)

if you are ever in poland, please do not miss zakopane, and you will be so pleased if you visit the wladyslaw hasior gallery, i promise!

cool illustrator... chrissie abbott

another addition to my ever-growing list of illustrator's i love: chrissy abbott.
her work is so much fun! and that hand-drawn type up above? oh me oh my, i'm in love.

youngblood gallery opening

as promised, here are some photos from the opening at youngblood gallery on saturday night. i was shocked and pleased at how many people came out to celebrate the reopening of the gallery in its brand new, gorgeous space.

it was so much fun, and i even got a surprise visit from my college pal, jake, who i haven't seen in almost 2 years!

(ryan on the left, jake on the right)

i also got to meet erin tyner (of miniature figure photo fame), which was such a treat. (she is also selling her prints at youngblood!)

THANK YOU to all of you who came out for the show. i hope you liked it!!
